Turn up the heat

Coincidently it has been very cold the last 2 days here in currently-not-so-sunny sunny South Africa. But that's not what my title refers to.

As previously stated I'm trying to pioneer 2 businesses. The one revolved around a possible 2 year contract. Which has fallen through. Leaving me essentially unemployed.

The second involves retailing some nutritional products that I've been using the last couple of months with outstanding results. The products are made by an network marketing company called Herbalife. In fact I've been retailing some of there products over the last couple of months via word of mouth with reasonable success.

So now I will be doing some advertising campaigns to see what kind of results they yield.

There seem to be many mixed emotions about network marketing companies. Actually, let me rephrase that, there seems to be a lot of negative things associated with some of the people that are distributors for network marketing companies.

I am hoping in the next few months to form my own definitive opinion, based on actual experience whether the issues relate to "Network" or "Multi-level" marketing, or whether the issues are with certain unsavoury character that perform their business in unethical manners.

After all, you can't hold Amway or Herbalife (or any other MLM company) responsible for bad distributors. Or can you.

I'm looking at this with the following assumptions:
  • There is no such thing as a get rich quick plan. All business takes work.
  • Being a Herbalife/other network marketer is the same as having a Steers/McDonald's/Mugg&Bean/KFC/Spar franchise (except that its much cheaper to lay out the capital). Some Steers' are better than others depending on the commitment and ethics of their owners, the franchisor does not have complete control over the ongoings of each frahchisee.
  • My ultimate consideration for a business is a) Do the products improve someone's lives and b) Do the products generate return customers.
Another question is this, "Is network marketing a valid, ethical means of taking your products out to the market?". Why not use normal distribution means?

Now so far I have received nothing but good decent input from Herbalife itself. From distributors I have received mixed input/recommendations on the ethics scale. Granted my ethics are much higher than the average Joe. In the end I decide (based on my standards and principles) how I will run my business.

In terms of the products, well I'm still using them everyday and that's been since the end of October 2005. So for me it has a) improved my life and b) Turned me into a satisfied return customer.

So far so good, I see great potential here. At least from a retail point of view. The other great thing is that currently I am able to distribute my products in 61 countries.

More on this another time... will keep you guys posted.

I made R703 last week because of word of mouth, so lets do some advertising and see what happens... got to run...
